Choose your Fabirc Journey

"Choose your Fabric Journey" is an interactive, screen-based experience that explores the lifecycle and environmental impact of different fashion materials, including denim, polyester, and mushroom leather. Designed and built using p5.js, the project allows users to navigate through multiple “fabric journeys,” each presenting a step-by-step narrative of how a fabric is produced, used, and ultimately disposed of. The experience begins with a visually driven home screen where users select a material to explore. Each pathway combines imagery, text, and interactive elements to communicate complex sustainability issues in an engaging and accessible way. For example, the denim journey includes a drawing interaction where users sketch their own pair of jeans before learning about cotton production, dyeing processes, and the environmental cost of consumer use and disposal. The polyester journey incorporates a quiz-based interaction that challenges users’ assumptions about decomposition time before revealing the material’s dependence on fossil fuels and its long-lasting environmental impact. In contrast, the mushroom leather pathway highlights an emerging sustainable alternative, focusing on mycelium growth, low-impact production, and biodegradability. A key focus of this project is the use of interaction as a storytelling tool. Rather than presenting static information, the project encourages users to actively engage with the content through clicking, drawing, and decision-making. I wanted this project to connect with my passion for fashion and sustainability, which is why I chose to do something that could educate viewers easily, while making sure it resonates with them. Visually, the interface draws inspiration from fashion editorials, using curated imagery, soft color palettes, and typographic hierarchy to create a cohesive and aesthetically engaging experience. Overall, the project aims to raise awareness about the hidden lifecycle of everyday clothing while introducing more sustainable material alternatives, prompting users to reflect on their own consumption habits within fashion.
