Rhythm Paint

Rhythm Paint started with nostalgia. Growing up watching my brother play rhythm games like Rhythm Heaven left a big impression on me, and painting has always been my creative outlet. When it came time to build something those two worlds collided, and a painting elephant named Pig (a play on pigment) was born. The goal was to make something playful and stylised rather than purely competitive. Most rhythm games are about precision and performance, but I wanted Rhythm Paint to feel more like an invitation to have fun. The result is a split-screen experience where you play a rhythm game on one side while an elephant paints along to the music on the other, with a free paint mode to just mess around in when the pressure is off. Juggling all the moving parts turned out to be the biggest challenge. The coding, the custom graphics, the chart mapping, and pulling everything together into one cohesive game, there were a lot of different angles to manage at once. The rhythm mapping especially humbled me. One thing I'm really proud of is that almost everything in this game was made from scratch. The artwork, the code, and even the music, which was composed by my brother's roommate Emory Rickards. Having original music made by someone close to the project made the whole thing feel complete.
